What should RTW tickets cost?

June 14th, 2006 by Pia Taylor

The following was posted recently in the forums, under ‘Budget Travel’ :

i was wondering if anyone had any advice or recommendations for a good RTW ticket for the places and prices, etc. I wanted to go from north Am. to S.A., then to africa, asia and australia, but prices ive found are $4000 or so! I talked with travellers who said they paid about 2000 Euros for mutil-stop and multi-continent tickets for use in one year. Any help or advice is welcome! thanks, anna’

> ‘round the world ticket q’s’

We took a quick look around for some websites that help out the first-time round-tripper:

“GapYear.com’s ‘Round The World Tickets Explained’”:http://www.gapyear.com/rtw/beginners_guide_to_round_the_world_tickets.html
Tom Griffiths describes RTW tickets as ‘awesome, one of the cheapest ways to see the world and perfect for the first time backpacker. ‘ The article includes examples of popular routes, ‘Tom’s top tips’, and ‘Useful facts worth knowing’

‘London -> Los Angeles -> Fiji -> Cook Islands -> New Zealand (into Auckland on the North Island, out of Christchurch on the South Island) -> Australia (into Sydney, tour around Australia) -> Indonesia (fly into Bali) and make your own way overland through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand flying out of Bangkok (Thailand) -> back home.

> Average price pre taxes: £900
> Average price with taxes: £1,000’

“Bootsnall’s ‘TripPlanner’”:http://www.bootsnall.com/tripplanner.shtml
Using the Bootsnall ‘TripPlanner’ you can ‘create your own customized Multi-Stop International trip and get an instant price’. They also have ‘sample trips’ and ‘Round the World Tips’

‘Los Angeles – Beijing or Shanghai – surface – Xi’an – Bangkok – Angkor Wat (Siem Reap) – Hong Kong – Tokyo or Osaka – Los Angeles’

> Their price: $1199 US

Losing heart

June 13th, 2006 by Pia Taylor

‘I left my heart in San Francisco.

High on a hill, it calls to me.
To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars.
The morning fog may chill the air, I don’t care
My love waits there in San Francisco, above the blue and windy sea,
When I come home to you, San Francisco, your golden sun will shine for me.

> (Frank Sinatra)

Sometimes the places we visit, or people we met there, can take hold of us in such a way that we leave a bit of ourselves behind when we eventually have to take our reluctant leave.

In a bizarre story yesterday morning out of New Zealand I read about Whitney Anne Robie, a 23-year-old backpacker who lost her heart there, just not in quite the way one would expect…

> ‘Auckland District Health Board has confirmed that it has lost the heart of an American backpacker who died in Queenstown in May this year.’

> ‘Her heart went missing after it was sent to the DHB’s laboratory, Auckland Pathology LabPlus, for a post-mortem in May.’

> ‘A spokesperson for the board says LabPlus has been unable to find the heart, and has now ended the search. The DHB has begun an investigation into the incident.’

> tvnz.co.nz

Gives Sinatra’s song a rather macabre twist, doesn’t it.

Pamplona rent-a-balcony

June 12th, 2006 by Pia Taylor

Running of the Bulls

Maria of Bull Balcony.com rents out all kinds of rooms and apartments for the San Fermin Festival. She also rents out space on balconies overlooking the bull run.

Though at this late stage you’re unlikely to get accommodation, you might just be able to score yourself a place on ‘Christina’s Balcony’, located on the famous Mercaderes Street, above the notorious turn onto Estafeta.

So, if you’re heading to the festival and looking for a place to escape the crush of the crowds for a while (or a superior position for pouring sangria onto unsuspecting innocents below), check out the Bull Balcony Website

World Cup On A Budget

June 9th, 2006 by Pia Taylor

Today the much anticipated 2006 FIFA Soccer World Cup gets underway in Germany.

At 18:00 (CET) thousands of fans all over the world will be tuning in for the first match of hosts Germany vs Costa Rica, held in Munich.

Those of you keen beans who scrimped and saved to make the trip to Germany (in the noble pursuit of being where the action is) might be in need of some good advice on how to stretch the budget that little bit further.

The New York Times has published a series of articles grouped together as ‘A Travel Guide: The World Cup Made Easy’
with tips on ‘Where to stay, eat, party and watch matches free in Germany’s 12 host cities’.

In Munich, for example, you can watch the cup matches on a giant video screen in the open-air 20,000-seater Olympiastadion.

And in Berlin you can join 9,999 other avid fans in a replica of the Olympic Stadium in front of the Reichstag. This one isn’t free (3 Euros gets you in), but on certain dates performances by the Black-Eyed Peas (June 28) and James Blunt (July 7) are included in the ticket price.

Bangkok Comes Clean

June 8th, 2006 by Pia Taylor

Khao San Road, Bangkok

Thailand is a very popular backpacking destination. In fact, it ranked third in a recent survey of places backpackers would most like to visit next.

Now, anyone who’s ever set foot in Thailand’s chaotic capital, Bangkok, will never (no, not ever) forget the city’s rather distinctive aroma:

> ‘Memories of Thailand come with memories of smells. In Bangkok, some of those smells are enticing, especially the sidewalk food stalls and the non-durian parts of the fruit stands. Then there are the durians, of course, and the stench of the klongs’.

> ‘The klongs are the little canals that used to run through the whole city before the age of traffic jams. They would be a romantic step back in time if they weren’t stinky flows of brackish water and sewage.’

> ‘Tim Leffel’s Cheapest Destinations’

But, here’s the good news for anyone with sensitive nostrils:

>‘Thankfully, some relief is coming, according to this article. They started cleaning up and rerouting waste lines in Sukhumvit, which is kind of funny since it’s where many of the Bangkok expats live, but as long as it doesn’t stop there it’s a good first step.’
