Balaclava is known all over the world. Its name became not only a toponym but also a common noun connected to ancient legends, cruel battles and romantic adventures. Its territory was at different stages inhabited by Tavrs, Scythians, Huns, Goths, Greeks, Genoese.
Territory-wise, Balaclava is the biggest region of Sevastopol to this day. Area of Balaklava covers the South Coast of Crimea, offsets of the Crimean Mountains, fertile valleys, hectares of vineyards, medieval fortresses, ancient Orthodox churches, dock yards, mines, holiday houses, tourist camps and modern hotels. To top that all up, there is a beautiful sea with astonishing bays and beaches.
For decades Balaclava was a closed town making it impossible to visit by guests of Sevastopol as well as its inhabitants. The reason for that was an ultrasecret submarine base located in Balaklava. By today, a lot of things have changed in life of Balaclava - check points have disappeared off the roads, submarines have gone from the bay, modern hotels and gourmet restaurants have appeared. Balaclava is now becoming an international resort and yacht centre by attracting tourists from all over the world.
