Around the world with 30 words: a new language guide for travellers

July 22nd, 2009 by The Backpackers Team

30words.jpgAn interesting new series of language guides have just been launched that backpackers might find rather useful: 30 Words.

They’re compact, they’re focused and they’re waterproof (always handy).  When it comes to language, often simplest is best, so having enough words to get by is usually better than having too many too remember.

“We make a unique type of language guide (http://www.30words.com/) that is designed to enable travelers to start speaking local languages from day one on the road! The philosophy behind our guides is that knowing even a handful of key words and phrases in the local language can be the difference between a mundane travel experience and an unforgettable adventure.  Further, our guides’ portability and durability make them a great fit for travelers looking to get off the beaten path.  30 WORDS are waterproof, tear proof and passport sized so they slide easily into any pocket. Finally, we supplement our printed guides with free online content that allows users to customize their guides according to their travel needs and interests.”

The guides focus on specific topics, each of which is downloadable.  There’s something for all kinds of travellers, from lists of medical conditions (for the accident prone?), or the most important surfing terms that’ll help you find the waves.

The guides are currently only available in Spanish, but more are in the pipeline.

To find out more, visit www.30words.com.

Save money: book early (the cash-strapped backpacker’s mantra?)

April 20th, 2009 by The Backpackers Team

TrainlineBackpacking, by its very nature, is a random hopping from one destination to another, usually without too much planning, often on the spur of must-find-new-adventure moment.

Unless you’re the kind of traveller who maps out an itinerary, strict budget, highlights-route and actually sticks to it, booking early for bus, plane, train or boat travel isn’t going to come naturally…  But, and here’s the rub: it can save you SO much money – certainly enough, if done regularly, to make your overall trip last that bit longer.

So, what to do… Sacrifice the spontaneous for the terribly organised?  Perhaps the compromise between over-stretched wallet, and need for spur-of-the-moment can be bridged by choosing some transport options way in advance: picking stretches of planned travel, and filling in the rest with spontaneity unbounded.

Book a flight from A to B, a month or two in advance, then figure out, on the hoof, how you’re going to get to A in the first place.  There’s adventure in that too.

So, with that in mind, take a look at this advice from UK rail ticket retailer Trainline.  By buying in advance online (single fares available up to 12 weeks in advance), you can save up to 43% on the fares you’d be buying at the station on the day.  That’s a fair whack.

And, if you’re worried you’re going to miss the fare you want, just sign up for a ticket alert and they’ll let you know when advance fares are up for grabs.

Proving there’s nothing wrong with a little planning, here and there (your wallet will thank you).
