Sticking To Your Budget: Free Things For Backpackers To Do In Europe

November 6th, 2007 by Pia Taylor

Walking Along the SeineHaving just come back from a jaunt around Europe, I know well how hard it is to keep within budget, especially in the major cities, where prices are higher, and there’s so much to see and do.

But, there are quite a few free things one can do, to take some strain off the budget.

Like, when in Paris, deciding not to pay to visit the top of the Eiffel Tower, and opting instead to climb up the steep stairs to the Sacre Coeur, offering a free and breath-taking view of the city below (the walk alone will likewise rob you of breath if you’re even marginally unfit).

Or absorbing a good dose of art, culture and things historical in London’s National Gallery, and the British Museum (they’re both free).

Kathleen Crislip, resident student travel expert over at About.com, has put together a nice little list of suchlike activities in a selection of Europe’s main (and more expensive) cities for backpackers right here.

There’s more to do for free than you might have imagined.
