Afrika Burns: Burning Man, African-Style

November 1st, 2007 by Pia Taylor

Burning Man, African-StyleYou’ve heard about Burning Man, right?

That wild and often unhinged week-long celebration of life, love, culture, art, and hedonism held every year out in Nevada’s dusty desert…

Well, if you’re in the southern hemisphere this summer, there’s a new Burning Man on the cards, African style.

Afrika Burns is an ART festival… participant created…
an experiment in temporary community building… radical self-expression, self reliance and non-commercialism… encouraging a culture of environmental mindfulness.

Originally scheduled for mid-July (brrrrr… that would have been interesting), Africa’s answer to Burning Man will now be held from 22-25 November in the Tankwa Karoo, 3 hours north of Cape Town, South Africa.

Tickets for this debut event are available on a sliding scale, according to what you feel you can pay, and there are still some going for R150 – R200 (maximum price is R350 at the gate). More info here.
