The World’s New Seven Wonders Are Announced (But Do We Really Care?)
So, the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’ have been announced, and they are (with melodramatic drumroll, if you please):
- Chichén Itzá, Mexico
- Christ Redeemer, Brazil
- The Great Wall, China
- Machu Picchu, Peru
- Petra, Jordan
- The Roman Colloseum, Italy (sic)
- The Taj Mahal, India
Funny, I would have made sure to get the names right, and, in my ever so humble opinion, spelling Rome’s great Colosseum as ‘Colloseum’ is just a little careless for something that has been “elected to represent global heritage throughout history”.
As previously mentioned, I have some rather strong reservations about all the hoohah and hype surrounding what they grandly refer to as the ‘first ever global election’ (what a load of hogwash, but don’t get me started).
Dan of LostGlobe has some interesting thoughts on the matter, and I was rather amused to see that the Vatican is rather peeved, accusing the New7Wonders organisers of ‘deliberately ignoring Christian monuments’ (they’d have liked the Sistine Chapel on the list).
Tut tut. Well, let’s hope the newly crowned wonders can cope with the increased influx of tourists that’s bound to follow on this hype. I think I’d give them all wide berth until the furore calms down.

Ha ha, well at least the Vatican agrees with my nomination for alternative christian monuments. I think I explained the christian bias I think got Christ the Redeemer there but there is also the population bias. Not many would suggest the great wall doesn’t deserve it’s spot but it provides a good example, Imagine every person in the world voted, there are 1 billion people in china and 99% are probably going to vote for the great wall. How could it not get in just on Chinese votes alone.
