Africa’s Burning Man: Afrika Burns
Just about everyone knows about the incredible experience that is the Burning Man Festival, the ‘drug-fueled hippie fest/wildest art show in the world’ that takes place every August in Black Rock City, Nevada.
We’ve written about it many times and we’ll be picking it up again in the months to come.
What we’ve recently found out, though, is that there’s going to be an African version of Burning Man called, aptly, Afrika Burns.
Here’s what organisers of the fledgling festival say it’s all about:
* An ART and MUSIC FESTIVAL heavily inspired by BURNING MAN… * Attracting international participants with an emphasis on forming artistic collaborations that are displayed and/or performed… * Involving radical self expression and self reliance… * An experiment in temporary community building… * Exploring concepts related to ART outside gallery and museum institutions… * Expanding and bridging the concepts of Art Biennales and BURNING MAN… * Encouraging a culture of environmental mindfulness.Afrika Burns is set to take place between 20-22 July this year, at an as yet undisclosed venue somewhere in the Western Cape. Tickets are supposed to go on sale mid-March, though there’s no news of that just yet.
