Do You Play It Safe When You Travel?

When you choose a destination, does it matter to you how safe it is? Or do you like to live on the edge? To laugh in the face of danger?
If you prefer to play it super-safe (and boring?), you’ll be wanting to pay a visit to Monte Carlo, voted the world’s safest destination, followed, respectively, by New Zealand, Malta, Switzerland and Singapore.
American travel expert, Laura McKenzie, who compiled the top-five list, had this to say: ‘At a time when safety has become a key consideration in the planning of a vacation, deciding where to go is an even more important decision.’
Apparently, safest bet Monte Carlo has a police force that ‘numbers one officer for every 100 residents, along with 24-hour video surveillance of the entire principality’. It also boasts some of the ‘finest and most hygienic food in the world’.
Exciting as that sounds (ahem), I have a feeling a more exotic destination, like Turkey, with all its inherent dangers, is far more my cup of tea.

I live in a country where I see robberies every week in my own neighbourhood. I’d really like to experience walking down the road with a backpack full of stuff without worrying that it’s going to be stolen from me.
Sure, it’d get boring after a while… but that’d be a great holiday for me in many ways.

a good point… guess there has to be some sort of balance. i found travelling in london very different from being in south africa, for example. in london, you can use ipods, cameras and so on without feeling overly threatened. in south africa, you’d think twice… and be very worried someone would snatch them. even worse, that they would harm you as well. not fun, though i’ve so far managed to avoid coming to any harm myself.
