Munich Oktoberfest

Every backpacker knows about this one. It’s the Munich Oktoberfest, that revered bastion of beer festivals around the world, and it’s coming up in just a few weeks’ time.

Two weeks of beer-sampling, lolling about in beer tents watching German bar maids in traditional getup carry seemingly impossible numbers of steins in their own two hands – it’s all part and parcel of the Oktoberfest experience.

The festival, which gets started this year on the 16th of September, and runs until the 3rd of October, sees around 6 million people pass through its gates, making it the largest public fair in the world.

Fun facts: Last year, 6 million mugs of beer were sold, 219,443 pairs of sausages were consumed, 459,279 chickens and 88 oxen were roasted during Oktoberfest.

There’s no entrance fee, and a litre of beer will set you back between 6.95 EUR and 7.50 EUR.

If you haven’t been before, check out this extensive guide, as well as the official Oktoberfest website.

Prost!
