Il Tomatina: The World’s Biggest Foodfight

Anyone seen that awful movie, The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes? You know, that one in which hundreds of mumbling and rather grumpy tomatoes declare Tomato War and throw themselves violently at anything that makes them mad (which is just about everything)?
It’s the kind of movie that’s so very bad that you just have to laugh, if you know what I mean…
Unbelievably, there was even a sequel (yes, I’ve seen both), called, somewhat predictably, Return of the Killer Tomatoes (one of George Clooney’s earliest movies – shock shock, horror horror).
Well, thankfully, the tomatoes at Il Tomatina don’t have a mind of their own, but their hurlers certainly do. Around 20,000 participants descend on the small Spanish town of Bunyol every August, pumped and ready to fling squishy tomatoes at anything that moves.
The carnage at what has become known as the world’s biggest foodfight would certainly make those vengeful killer tomatoes proud.

You wear the crappest clothes you can, then once it’s all over, you head down to the river to wash off. There are usually showers set up there.
They wash the streets down with big hoses attached to the Roman aquaducts. Don’t envy them that job.
