What should RTW tickets cost?

June 14th, 2006 by Pia Taylor

The following was posted recently in the forums, under ‘Budget Travel’ :

i was wondering if anyone had any advice or recommendations for a good RTW ticket for the places and prices, etc. I wanted to go from north Am. to S.A., then to africa, asia and australia, but prices ive found are $4000 or so! I talked with travellers who said they paid about 2000 Euros for mutil-stop and multi-continent tickets for use in one year. Any help or advice is welcome! thanks, anna’

We took a quick look around for some websites that help out the first-time round-tripper:

“GapYear.com’s ‘Round The World Tickets Explained’”:http://www.gapyear.com/rtw/beginners_guide_to_round_the_world_tickets.html
Tom Griffiths describes RTW tickets as ‘awesome, one of the cheapest ways to see the world and perfect for the first time backpacker. ‘ The article includes examples of popular routes, ‘Tom’s top tips’, and ‘Useful facts worth knowing’

‘London -> Los Angeles -> Fiji -> Cook Islands -> New Zealand (into Auckland on the North Island, out of Christchurch on the South Island) -> Australia (into Sydney, tour around Australia) -> Indonesia (fly into Bali) and make your own way overland through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand flying out of Bangkok (Thailand) -> back home.

> Average price pre taxes: £900
> Average price with taxes: £1,000’

“Bootsnall’s ‘TripPlanner’”:http://www.bootsnall.com/tripplanner.shtml
Using the Bootsnall ‘TripPlanner’ you can ‘create your own customized Multi-Stop International trip and get an instant price’. They also have ‘sample trips’ and ‘Round the World Tips’

‘Los Angeles – Beijing or Shanghai – surface – Xi’an – Bangkok – Angkor Wat (Siem Reap) – Hong Kong – Tokyo or Osaka – Los Angeles’

> Their price: $1199 US

Other great sites you can try are The Travellers Lounge, Travelmood and Around The Worlds.
